Sleep Is God

about

Born out of a discovered chord progression I kept repeating while falling asleep one day (getting slower and slower), ‘Sleep Is God’ captures both lyrically and musically the fatigue issues I was facing during my student days, falling asleep every afternoon. My point was to do something of justice to the sleep chords I had fallen in love with. Using the same sound-set as ‘Way Out’ I married a rusty plod with a monstrous bassline. This song was the most challenging of the project, due mostly to the vocals. Most of the music was done in August of ’03, but the vocals keep presenting problems for a year after that. It was holding the whole album up as it was the only song I had left to do, so it eventually got finished in 04.The song ends the first disc with a slowing repeat of that original chord set, fading out into sleep from consciousness to unconsciousness.

lyrics

You think you know death / You're so big and strong / So many close times / Where you've stood true / You know when the time comes / You'll face it head on / Heroism will get you through / No matter what the cost / But you don't know death / You're only strong against the pain / You don't know like I do / Dying every day / Every arvo around 2pm / My consciousness is gone / In complete desperate fear / I truly know death because / In feeble submission / I become nothing / As I stare into the hole / Of gaping annihilation / I die like clockwork / I'm chipping away slow / At my sad remaining self / Replacing it with nothingness / There's no need to fist / My body into submission / Brawn counts for nothing / When you're fast asleep / The great equalizer / Is my eternal king / As I wither into bed / I bow down to god. / SLEEP IS GOD... / Sleep... is god... / So sleepy...
